This year we have five of the most talented young directors from Peru  and one actress / Este año presentaremos a cinco de los más talentosos directores jóvenes del Perú y una actriz:

Rosario García-Montero: “Las malas intenciones”, at the Opening / en la Inauguración

Héctor Gálvez: “Lucanamarca” y “Paraíso”, at the Closing / en la Clausura.

Admission to all screenings and receptions is FREE and OPEN to the GENERAL PUBLIC. Festival seating is done on a First-come, first-served basis.  All films have English subtitles.

Joaquín, Antuanet, Lalo, Mario and Sara live in PARAISO, a shantytown on the outskirts of the capital city of Lima. They are at the age of deciding a future, yet they don’t have many options to choose from. If growing up into youth was ever complicated, living in PARAISO makes things even tougher, seeing how day to day the milieu around them denies their dreams and opportunities.

But they feel they have to do something about it.

They struggle to hang on to any possible illusion: enlisting in the army, finishing high school with the best grades, building a pool where there is not even running water, or just looking at the photo of a disappeared parent. Simple and utopian desires like the one Joaquin wishes to fulfill: to fly like the trapeze artist of the new circus that just got into town.

Joaquín, Antuanet, Lalo, Mario y Sara viven en PARAISO un barrio ubicado en las afueras de la ciudad de Lima. Ellos están en la edad de decidir por su futuro pero no tienen muchas opciones de las cuales escoger. Y es que si el ingreso a la juventud es siempre complicado, vivir en PARAISO les dificulta mucho más las cosas pues comprueban como día a día el duro entorno en el que viven va matando sus sueños y oportunidades.

Pero sienten que algo tienen que hacer.

Así que buscan cualquier ilusión a la cual aferrarse: Ya sea ingresar al ejército, terminar el colegio con las mejores notas, construir una piscina en un lugar que no tiene agua potable o simplemente ver la foto de un padre desaparecido. Deseos utópicos y sencillos como el que espera realizar Joaquín: Poder volar como lo hace el trapecista del nuevo circo que acaba de llegar.

Santiago de Lucanamarca, a remote farming community in the Peruvian Andes, is shaken by the presence of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. They have come to open the tombs of the 69 people who died in the massacre of April 3, 1983. Twenty years later there is a chance to close old wounds, but distrust can also be felt in the streets of the town. Aren’t we all Peruvians? asks one of the people affected. The history of Lucanamarca shows us how elusive justice can be.

Santiago de Lucanamarca, una remota comunidad campesina de los Andes peruanos, es remecida por la presencia de la Comisión de la Verdad y Reconciliación que viene a abrir las tumbas de los 69 fallecidos en la matanza del 3 de abril de 1983. Veinte años después surge la posibilidad de cerrar las viejas heridas pero la desconfianza recorre también las calles del pueblo. ¿Acaso no somos todos peruanos? Se pregunta uno de los afectados. La historia de Lucanamarca nos muestra lo esquiva que puede ser la justicia.

The milk of sorrow / La teta asustada. Claudia Llosa, 2009. (94’)

Fausta suffers from “The Milk of Sorrow”, an illness transmitted through mother’s milk by women who’ve been raped during Peru’s Internal Conflict. Stricken with the fear that she’s contracted the illness from her mother’s breast milk . Fausta goes to extreme lengths to protect her own sexuality and safety. After her mother’s sudden death, she finds herself compelled to embark on a frightening journey for re-awakening, freedom and wholeness.

Fausta sufre de “La teta asustada”, una enfermedad transmitida a través de la leche materna de las mujeres que han sido ultrajadas durante el conflicto armado interno en el Perú. Asustada ante la posibilidad de haber adquirido la enfermedad por la leche de su madre, Fausta recurre a extremos para proteger su propia seguridad y sexualidad. Luego de la súbita muerte de su madre, ella se embarca en un viaje de redescubrimiento y libertad.

Awards: 2010 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Film; Winner of the Golden Bear Award (Best Film) and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 59th Annual Berlin Film Festival.

A doctor, forced by circumstance to also drive a taxi cab, finds himself challenged by a fare who required more than a lift. 

Un doctor, quién a sus horas libres se desempeña como taxista por razones económicas, se ve envuelto en un crimen que pondrá a prueba su orgullo y ética profesional.

Days of Santiago / Días de Santiago. Josué Méndez, 2004. (83’)

Twenty-three year old Santiago returns home from the Peruvian army ill-prepared to cope with the realities of life. Haunted by this violent military past, he is conflicted by is desire for education and his temptation to join his comrades ina decadent life of crime.

Santiago, de 23 años, regresa de la milicia peruana y se enfrenta a las realidades de la vida sin estar preparado. Atormentado por su violento pasado militar, siente un conflicto entre su deseo de educarse y la tentación de unirse a sus compañeros en la decadente vida del crimen.

Awards: Fribourg 2004 Film Festival: Fipresci Prize, Grand Prix; Lima Latin American 2004 Film Festival: Best Actor, Critics Award.
